The Starting Point: A Focus on Electric Mobility

In collaboration with Google, Civey took a closer look at the topic of electric mobility in Germany. How much interest is there in electric vehicles among the general public? What is the state of brand loyalty? What factors influence consumers’ decisions to switch manufacturers when purchasing an electric car?

Our Solution: A Study Using Representative Real-Time Data

Civey collected representative real-time data for Google’s Automotive Team. We specifically surveyed people who are planning to purchase a car in the near future. In our study, we analyze how important brand loyalty is to consumers when buying a vehicle and which key factors influence loyalty or willingness to switch brands when purchasing a hybrid or electric vehicle.

Combining our survey results with Google Search Trends data provides a comprehensive picture of the attitudes and behavior of potential electric car buyers.

The result: Google Data Snacks—all insights at a glance

Google Data Snacks highlight an exciting trend: Although sales of electric vehicles have recently been declining, public interest in electric cars is growing. Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are attracting a great deal of attention. Search volume for them has risen by 42% in 2024. German manufacturers are performing less well, with 3% growth, but they’re also seeing an increase.

Another interesting trend: Consumers are comparing brands more frequently (+21%). In our study, we highlight which aspects are particularly important to them in this process.

An overview of the results:

  • 23% of brand-loyal potential electric vehicle buyers cite satisfaction and positive experiences with the brand as the reason for their loyalty.
  • An equal number (23%) cite the reliability of their current brand.
  • As a reason for switching brands, 22% of consumers cite dissatisfaction with the vehicle’s value for money.
  • 14% state that their current manufacturer does not offer a suitable electric model.

  • Google uses the insights on electric mobility gained from the joint study for data-driven communication.
